Young Lewes basketballer leads her team to national victory
An England Under 15 basketball player led the South East regional team to victory last week, by winning all six of their games in a national tournament.
Amelia Sandie is a founding member of The Brighton Cougars girls squad and hit the headlines recently when she represented the sport in the inspirational Always #LikeAGirl sports video that went viral.
Last weekend [16-17 Sept], the youngster from Lewes Old Grammar School (LOGS) was appointed captain of the U15 team who trounced the East region in the final as she led the South East to national championship victory.
LOGS has been commended by Amelia’s mother, Claire Martin, for their continued support and enthusiasm for her progress with the sport. “It was a fantastic atmosphere”, explains Claire. “We are all over the moon – and it was an honour for her to captain this brilliant squad.”
Amelia, who lives in Brighton, is also captain of the LOGS netball and rounders teams and a keen hockey player. But she was encouraged to take up basketball by her dad, Hugh, a former Australian player, who eventually became her club coach. Her success over the past seven years has been hard won but worth it.
PE teacher Hannah Thorpe from the independent Sussex school has no doubt increased success is within Amelia’s reach. “She is an outstanding student across all the sports we play and an excellent role model for sport at LOGS.”
