LOGS PUPILS MAKE THEIR MARK IN MALTA
Lewes Old Grammar School’s first multi disciplinary international sports tour, for which it fielded netball, football, hockey and rugby teams, saw 28 students sharpening their skills under a Maltese sun.
They returned from the half term trip bolder, wiser, fitter… and with the hint of an October tan.
The school’s all-girl netball squad was the hero of the tour – emerging victorious from a friendly fixture at IC Malta school at which the U13s won 12-4 and the U14s 18-8.
Meanwhile, the boys’ rugby players were in training with current Maltese international, Daniel Holliday.
“The students relished the opportunity to be coached by an international player and the boys’ development throughout the session was impressive,” said trip leader, PE teacher Robyn Stone.
In the hockey camp, both the boys and girls teams put up a spirited defence against Qormi U14s and Sliema Hotsticks, but were ultimately defeated by powerful home sides.
“It gave our pupils some fantastic experience moving forward in our hockey season, though,” added Robyn.
The final fixture of the tour was an U13 boys’ football match against locals, Sirens FC, which the visitors narrowly lost 2-1.
It was all go off the pitches, too. Outside of training and fixtures, pupils enjoyed swimming, beach volley ball, rounders, kayaking and snorkeling on Camino island, as well as a trip to Valletta.
“This was our first ever sports tour so we wanted it to be jam-packed full of sports training, fixtures, for which we had to travel to various venues, as well as other activities,” said Robyn. “Malta was chosen as it offered the opportunity for all four of the sports to be played, which meant that we could take multi-talented sports men and women. It really was a trip no one is ever likely to forget and I would like to thank all the staff involved in making it such a success. The only downside was that we had to come home!”
