Sussex students spread festive cheer at annual Carols concert

Senior students and staff from Lewes Old Grammar School (LOGS) staged their annual Christmas Carols Concert on Thursday.

Pupils from years 7 to 13 took part in the advent event, which featured an eclectic programme of classic carols such as ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ as well as more modern songs like George Michaels’ ‘Last Christmas’.

The evening also included several recitals, including a humorous and topical piece called ‘A Merry Christmas Brexit’, read by Head Prefect, Alexander Grantham.

Towards the end of the evening, Claire Martin OBE, a music patron of the school, professional jazz singer and BBC Radio 4 presenter, delivered a winning rendition of ‘Walking in a Winter Wonderland’. She was accompanied on piano by Year 11 student Srija Ray.

Rachel Munro, singing teacher at LOGS, said: “The concert brought together our showchoir, Vox choir, staff choir and our music patron for an unforgettable evening. I’m really proud of everyone for working so hard – their effort paid off and the results were spell-binding.”

This year, funds raised from the senior school concert went to the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity, which helps young families affected by cerebral palsy and associated diseases. Dame Vera’s daughter, Virginia, was guest of honour at the concert.

“The calibre of talent on display on Thursday was incredible,” said LOGS Bursar, Tim Laker. “We’re so fortunate to have so many gifted musicians and dramatists at LOGS, and we’re delighted to have been able to use this opportunity to raise funds for such a worthy cause.”
