LOGS Lion King cast take pride in their performance
Lewes Old Grammar Junior School let out a ‘Roar’ last week in their summer performance of songs from the much-loved classic, The Lion King.
Thirty-five Year 3 and 4 pupils took part in the show which was directed by Jade Jago – a Year 3 teacher who is taking over as Junior School music teacher in September.
The students narrated parts of the story while performing a raft of hit songs from the world famous musical. Dipping their paws into many aspects of live performance, they also had the chance to create the scenery and decor for the show with the help of Year 4 teacher Alice Shelbourn.
If the audience thought the costumes looked authentic that is because Julia Tucknott, the Senior School Drama Teacher, sourced them from a company based in Botswana. A portion of the proceeds from this were given to WaterAid, a charity that brings clean water and sanitation to communities all over the world.
Talented Year 10s were also invited to take part in the circle of life. With the help of Louise Watts, a professional makeup artist, they helped transform the young performers into Simba, his friends and foes.
“The show was a great opportunity for the children to get creative,” said Jade. “They were so engaged and energised, and they bonded greatly over the experience – it was wonderful to see.”
After five weeks of rehearsals, singing lessons and preparation, the hard work was rewarded with a successful evening. The production was enjoyed by all as the audience and performers alike embraced the problem-free philosophy – Hakuna Matata!
