Young Musician Bursary Finalists: Ayla Sahin, Claire Ward, Gideon Brooks, Rebekah Smith

Aspiring Musicians Compete for Bursary in Royal Show

Coro Nuovo, a prestigious Mid-Sussex choir, is steadily gaining a reputation for excellence. Their next concert ‘Music & Monarchy’ provides an opportunity for up and coming young musicians to battle for a £1000 bursary to put towards their musical careers.

The finalists Ayla Sahin (violin), Claire Ward (soprano), Gideon Brooks (trumpet) and Rebekah Smith (soprano) will individually showcase their talents at ‘Music & Monarchy’ before the winner is announced at the end of the evening.

This year’s competitors range from 18 to 24 and are in varying levels of education – from Ayla just finishing her A-levels to Claire and Rebekah studying for their masters and Gideon studying for his postgraduate degree.

The concert is dedicated to celebrating the 65th Anniversary of the Accession of Queen Elizabeth II. Coro Nuovo will perform ‘Zadok the Priest’ in honour of the Queen as the piece is traditionally performed at every monarch’s coronation, alongside other classics such as ‘Greensleeves’ and the ‘Triumphal Chorus’ from Aida.

Coro Nuovo was formed five years ago and consists of around 50 experienced singers, many of whom are involved in other choirs and musical organisations. Performing in and around the Mid Sussex area, Coro Nuovo has been growing in popularity with the aid of their Musical Director, international opera singer Andrew Rees.

The bursary initiative is now in its second year. Last year’s winner, Hannah Corcoran, used the funds to buy a new saxophone. “The competition helps aspiring musicians in more than one way,” said Hannah. “The publicity after the event was great for raising my profile as a performer in Sussex as well as my home town of Brighton.”

Coro Nuovo’s ‘Music & Monarchy’ concert will take place on Sunday 16th July 2017 at 7.30 pm at the Ascension Church, Vale Road, Haywards Heath.
Tickets are priced at £15 – or £12 for concession and are available online: coronuovo.org.uk/tickets or by phone: 07740 946276
