Festive fun at Lewes junior school

Pupils at Lewes Old Grammar School (LOGS) are having themselves a merry little Christmas with an action-packed advent calendar full of festive events.

On Tuesday, children from the Junior School, Morley House, hosted their annual Christmas Carol concert, performing to a captive audience of parents, staff and trustees.i

Students from Years 3 to 6 took part in a musical rendition of the Christmas Story, including traditional carols and contemporary songs.

Bella Hook (Year 5) sang the solo in Once in Royal David’s City, and the choir sang On a Cold Winter’s Night, composed by Bella. The ensemble of 21 talented musicians performed Santa Claus is Coming to Town and nine Year 6 boys read an entertaining version of The Night Before Christmas. The finale was a moving performance of You Raise Me Up.

The concert was just the latest of Christmas celebrations at the junior school, after pupils took part in their annual nativity play last week. Students sang, danced and acted their way through ‘Grandma Hilda’s Magic Hats’, which featured a special international story which took them around the world from Lewes to Russia, Mexico to Australia.

Parents and students also came together for a series of Christmas cake workshops, supported by Lewes-based company Seven Sisters Spices. Assisted by professionals and parents, pupils put an age-old family recipe to the test by baking fruit cakes they could take home at the end of the day.

“Christmas is all about the community coming together to have fun,” said Carrie Whyte, head teacher of Morley House. “Our teachers and pupils worked so hard to put on an incredible show, and the Christmas carol concert was spell-bindingly brilliant. It’s safe to say Christmas has well and truly arrived at LOGS.”
