Lord Lieutenant salutes Lewes Old Grammar School (LOGS)

The Lord Lieutenant for East Sussex saluted a school production of Oh, What A Lovely War! on Wednesday, calling it “deeply moving and memorable” in the week following commemoration of the Somme.

Peter Field, Her Majesty’s most senior representative in the county, made an impromptu address to the audience on the last day of the show at Lewes Town Hall where ticket holders walked through shoulder-high trenches to reach their seats.

He said: “The first World War is usually known as the Great War because the British thought it would be the last. Sadly, that wasn’t the case.

“This outstanding production really brought the Great War graphically to life in a deeply moving and memorable way. There is such wonderful very young talent here on stage and I congratulate all of you and also all those involved with this production – direction, music, costumes, props. This is a show we will remember for a very long time.”

Mr Field’s comments followed a day-long visit to the school, which was founded during the reign of Henry VIII – who also created the Lord Lieutenant’s role.

Mr Field and his wife Margaret saw science and physics in action at the school and dropped in on English, French, maths, biology, geography and chemistry classes before meeting patrons and trustees over lunch.
