A 16-year-old Lewes Old Grammar School pupil has scooped a top prize in one of the hardest fought competitions to find Young Craftsman of the Year at the South of England Show.

Sam’s ingenious wooden desk lamp with adjustable rack and pinion arm won praise from judges in the Design & Technology section, taking third prize from among a record 94 entries.

The Young Craftsman of the Year competition began in 1987 and quickly became one of the most successful exhibits at the South’s premier agricultural show. It is open to young people aged 14 to 21, living or educated in Berkshire, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Kent, Surrey, East & West Sussex.

It was only the second year LOGS had entered the competition.

Bursar Tim Laker said: “It’s a real feather in our cap and well done to Sam for such a well-crafted entry. Hopefully, there will be plenty more creative winners in the years to come.”
